Mt. Meeker is a Siamese twin sister to Longs Peak, connected by a wide ridge, this giant is the second tallest peak in the Park at 13,991'. Meeker actually has double peaks, the western one being a bit higher. Between Mt. Meeker and Long Peak are Mills Glacier and Roaring Creek. Mills Moraine is evident further down the Gorge.
Like many landmarks, this mountain twin of Longs Peak was named for a man who was an important early influence of the area, rather than a pioneer of the conquering of this mountain. Nathan Meeker worked for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune in 1869 as the agriculture editor and came to this area to try out his theories of cooperative agriculture. He founded what is now known as Greeley, at the junction of the Poudre River and the South Platte River. Anna Dickinson, a lady lecturer in 1873, visited the area and climbed Longs Peak with Nathan's son. She thought that something should be named after him since the town of Greeley was named for Horace Greeley and not the founder who worked so hard to establish it. Nathan Meeker was killed by the Ute Indians in 1879.#
